Choosing the right frames for your face can be a difficult task. There’s often a big difference between what you like and what’s actually flattering on your face. Not to mention, there’s always an overwhelming selection of glasses! So, where do you even begin? We’ve put together a few fast facts to keep in mind when choosing your next set of frames.
Before you even think about what style of frame is best for your face shape, think about what style you want to go for. Do you want something a little edgier? Classic? Fun? Research some pictures of celebrities whose glasses you’ve always loved or eyewear brands you know of. This will help to make the experience of choosing frames a little less overwhelming! There’s just one more thing to determine before you hit the store. Do you know your face shape? Stand in front of the mirror and gauge what your features most resemble. Here are some of the more common face shapes:
Round
A broad forehead, full cheeks and rounded chin characterize round faces. Round faces are not very angular and the width and length are generally the same proportions. If you have a round face, the best types of frames to look for are angular and will contrast your face shape. This means you’re best to avoid frames that are rounded or oval and will exaggerate your face’s roundness. Opt for glasses that are wider than tall and are rectangular in nature.
Oval
A narrow forehead, high cheekbones and a narrow chin determine an oval face shape. If you have an oval face, consider yourself lucky! Most style of frames will work well and compliment your face shape. In saying that, you’re best to not choose glasses that will throw off your face’s balance. A good rule of thumb is to find frames that are as wide as the widest part of your face.
Square
Square faces have a wide forehead, broad cheeks and a strong, boxy jawline. Generally the face is proportional in width and length. When choosing frames you should aim to contrast the faces angular nature. Frames that have a cat eye-like quality or curved lines will help to soften the faces square jawline. This is a great way for choosing sunglasses as well. Oversized Jackie O-esque glasses will temper the square jawline as well.
Heart
Heart shaped faces have a broad forehead, high cheekbones and narrows to a pointed chin. In choosing glasses for a heart shaped face, you’re going to want to try and minimize the width of the forehead and broaden the chin. Frames that are wider at the bottom or circular will help to accentuate the best parts of a heart shaped face!
Base-Down Triangle
A base-down triangle face shape is essentially an inverted heart shape. This means a narrow forehead, broad cheeks and very full, square jawline. In choosing frames, try to find ones that have detailing on the top part of the glasses. Cat eye frames or ones that have color or detailing on the top half of the frame will draw attention away from the jawline.
Your face shape isn’t the only consideration to keep in mind when choosing your new frames. Even your hair color can come into play when choosing the perfect frames. Here are some ways that you can help coordinate your frames with your locks!
Brown Hair
If you’re a brunette with cool undertones opt for shades of black, pink and even tortoise shell. If you’re a brunette with warm undertones, stick to warm colors in your frames. Think deep greens, reds or a lighter shade of tortoise shell.
Red Hair
If you’re a red head jewel tones are incredibly complimentary. Go for rich greens, bold tortoise or even neutrals such a cream.
Black Hair
If you have black hair don’t shy away from bright, bold tones – rock them! However, you’re best to stay away from muted tones as they may wash out your complexion.
Grey and White Hair
If you have grey, salt and pepper or white hair, embrace a pop of color! Go for bright cherry, thick black or cobalt blue frames.
