What Causes Dry Eyes?

Dry eye syndrome is caused by a range of factors that disrupt the healthy lubrication of the eyes. Common causes include aging, which reduces tear production, and environmental factors like dry or windy climates, exposure to smoke, and high screen usage, which increase tear evaporation.
Certain medications, such as antihistamines and blood pressure drugs, can also decrease tear secretion. Medical conditions like Sjögren's syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, and thyroid disorders contribute to dry eye.

Additionally, wearing contact lenses for extended periods and not blinking enough, especially during intense focus on digital screens, can make the condition worse.

Preventing and Treating Dry Eye Symptoms

Dry eye symptoms can be uncomfortable, but they're manageable with the right approach. Tips include:

  • Prevent dryness by ensuring you're drinking plenty of water and using a humidifier in dry environments
  • Shield your eyes from the wind with sunglasses and avoid direct airflow from fans or air conditioning on your face that can further dry out your eyes
  • For treatment, speak to our eye care team about lubricating eye drops and other possible treatment options
  • Consider omega-3 supplements to enhance tear quality
  • Reduce screen time where possible throughout the day
